Sound and video of meteorite crashing to Earth captured on video in P.E.I.

A confirmed meteorite recently landed in Prince Edward Island.

CHARLOTTETOWN — A P.E.I. resident’s home security camera captured video and audio of a meteorite crashing onto the walkway outside his front door.

The video is believed to show the first footage and sound of a meteorite landing on Earth — and the first reported and confirmed space rock to fall in the Maritimes.

That’s according to Chris Herd, the University of Alberta’s meteorite collection curator, who confirmed that the object that hit the walkway with a loud bang and left a pile of dusty debris in July 2024 was a meteorite.

Joe Velaidum, who lives with his partner Laura in Marshfield, P.E.I., just outside Charlottetown, says they never imagined the front door security camera they use to monitor deliveries would capture a meteorite strike.

Velaidum says he noticed the strange-looking debris when he returned from walking his dogs, and checked the security camera to find the source.

He was shocked at what he saw and heard on the video, which his partner sent to Herd for further inspection.

Herd, who just happened to be heading to P.E.I. on vacation a couple weeks later, was able to collect samples of the debris and confirm that what landed was indeed a meteorite.
