Nova Scotia singer pens song about 'growing old with your person'

NS singer gets personal with new song Nova Scotia singer Burry explores personal messages with their new single “I Don’t Miss You.”

Nova Scotia singer Burry mines new material from their life and their latest single explores a major milestone for them.

“(‘Our Home’) I wrote about my wife and kind of, like, growing old with your person,” Burry told CTV News Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “I’ve never really felt at home or, like, in a stable place, and she just provides that home and that stable place for me…no matter where we are in the world.”

The music video for “Our Home” features footage from Burry’s wedding last May.

“We brought my videographer with us to Portugal where we eloped and we filmed the entire trip,” Burry said. “It’s so special to be able to not only have a wedding video but to be the visuals for this song that I wrote about my wife.”

“Our Home” was Burry’s first single for their upcoming album; their second single, “I Don’t Miss You,” tackles a different kind of personal topic.

“That one is about my mom,” Burry said. “We don’t really have a relationship anymore. When I came out as non-binary and changed my name and pronouns, she was very unsupportive and I decided to set up this boundary for myself.

“I wrote a song…to be, like, ‘Hey, you’re missing out on a lot of fund stuff and that’s your choice.’”

Burry hopes to create a space for queer people through their music.

“A lot of TV shows I watch, the queer relationships are the ones that have the fighting or the deaths,” Burry said. “They’re not healthy representations of a queer relationship and what queer love it.

“That’s why I wanted to share our story.”
