Armed home invasion in Sudbury leads to kidnapping, drug charges

Four people – including two women from Sudbury and two young offenders from southern Ontario – have been charged following an armed home invasion last weekend.

The investigation revealed that two people were kidnapped in an earlier home invasion to help the suspects gain entry into another victim’s residence.

Sudbury police were called at 2:30 a.m. Aug. 3 about a home invasion into a residential unit on St. Charles Street in the north end of the city.

“Information provided was that individuals armed with guns were breaking into the residence,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

The suspects fled the scene before police arrived. Police quickly learned that the same suspects were involved in a separate home invasion that took place at 12:55 a.m. on Bruce Avenue that had not been reported to police.

“During the (Bruce Street) home invasion, the individuals responsible forced two people from inside the residence to attend the unit on St. Charles Street to gain entry to the home as the individuals were known to each other,” police said.

“Detectives from the major crime and integrated crime sections of our Criminal Investigation Division began investigating both incidents to determine the identities of those involved.”

 

A 45-year-old woman from Sudbury was arrested Aug. 4 and charged with two counts of break and enter, four counts of armed robbery, five counts of forcible confinement and two counts of kidnapping.

Around 10 p.m. on Aug. 4, two more suspects – 17-year-olds from southern Ontario – were arrested on Cambrian Heights Drive.

Using a search warrant, “officers located and seized a firearm, four grams of what is believed to be fentanyl and 25 grams of what is believed to be cocaine, as well as packaging materials and a scale,” police said.

The pair were charged with the same offences and appeared in weekend bail court along with the first suspect.

The fourth suspect was identified “as being involved in the trafficking of the illicit drugs seized and in possession of the firearm recovered inside the residence.”

A 34-year-old woman from Sudbury was arrested Aug. 5 and charged with unauthorized use of a firearm, possession of a prohibited device, careless use of a firearm and two counts of drug trafficking.

She is expected in bail court Tuesday.

“We would like to commend the tremendous efforts of our officers for identifying and locating the individuals believed to be responsible for very serious and dangerous offences,” police said.
