SAULT STE. MARIE -- On their day off last weekend, staff with the Great Lakes Forestry Centre in Sault Ste. Marie went into work to help battle the spread of COVID-19.

The staff used the quarantine lab to cook up a batch of hand sanitizer for local organizations that help the city's vulnerable.

They followed a recipe approved by the World Health Organization and by the end of the day staff had made 350 litres of hand sanitizer.

"All the organizations that will benefit from this will be the Sault Area Hospital, the Group Health Centre, the ARCH Hospice, Women in Crisis centre, Pauline’s Centre and the St Vincent Place," said Taylor Scarr, director integrated pest managementwith the Great Lakes Forestry Centre.

Scarr adds that the staff can make more sanitizer when the organizations run out.
