SAULT STE. MARIE -- Leaders from Anishinabek First Nations across Ontario are participating in a summit to map out their future.

Chiefs, community leaders and citizens representing 40 first nations across the province, with the Anishinabek Nation are in Sault Ste. Marie for a three day summit. The summit is to educate everyone on the upcoming vote for the nation’s new governance agreement. Voting to accept the agreement starts next month, but there’s no firm date on when communities will have to vote.

"We do not want to force anybody. You know we got to give time and respect to the wishes of the communities the leader ship," said Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Glen Hare.

Hare says communities will be given as much time as needed to explain the new agreement to their communities.

"We’re at a critical point, there’s history making here," said Hare.

The Anishinabek Nation and the federal government spent 24 years working on a new governance agreement.
