Alleged impaired driver stopped by police for speeding
A 33-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie is facing several charges – including impaired driving – after a northern Ontario traffic stop on Saturday.
On Aug. 3 shortly after 12 a.m., members of the Sault Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment say they were on patrol when officers observed a westbound car travelling at a high rate of speed on Trunk Road in the city.
“A traffic stop was initiated and while the officer was speaking to the driver, police determined the driver had consumed alcohol and a subsequent arrest was made,” said police in a news release.
“The driver was transported to the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment for further testing.”
As a result of the investigation, the 33-year-old local driver is facing two impaired driving charges along with a charge for having control of a motor vehicle with an unsealed container of liquor and an additional charge for failing to surrender their license.
The vehicle involved was impounded for seven days by police and the accused also received a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 2.
None of the allegations has been proven in court.
“If you suspect an impaired driver, don't hesitate ‘make the call’ and call 911,” said police.
