A 20-year-old suspect in Sudbury was arrested last week after trying to escape from police responding to reports of erratic driving.

The incident took place on Highway 17 near Walden just after 9 a.m. April 25.

“Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Tuesday.

“Upon speaking with the driver, the driver fled from police and continued down the highway. A second attempt was made by police to stop the vehicle, which was successful, resulting in the driver then fleeing on foot.”

At that point, Manitoulin OPP became involved and the North East region canine unit was called in. The driver was located, arrested and transported to the OPP detachment.

Charges include dangerous driving, fleeing from police, impaired driving and being a novice driver with alcohol in the bloodstream.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on June 10. The driver was issued a 90-day driver's licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
