A tragedy in Sagamok Anishnawbek brings the community together
Residents are pulling together in support of a local family from Sagamok Anishnawbek, near Massey, after a devastating fire earlier this month.
The family lost all of their possessions during a devastating house fire last Thursday.
On Dec. 15, Rhea Assinewe and Francois Beaupre were at a Christmas concert when someone came up to them and said "I think your house is on fire." It was, and as a result the family home filled with priceless memories was lost.
“Seeing our childhood home burnt to a crisp was absolutely heartbreaking,” said their daughter, Dae Fawn Assinewe, in a Facebook message to CTV News Northern Ontario.
There were no injuries in the fire.
Dae Fawn told CTV News the community has really come together to support them so close to Christmas, putting them up in a hotel, offering food and clothing.
“I'm in tears every day just seeing the support and love we have been getting. This is so important and generous to our family just doing this,” she said.
"My brother (Robear) and I have seen the hard work and money put into the family home they made for us and our children. It was our favourite place to visit. Our grandkids are devastated.
“I couldn't be more proud of my parents and how they raised us. Breaks my heart my parents, brother and I lost things that can never be replaced,” Dae Fawn said.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Rhea and Francois.
