For the first time since Sudbury police announced that they arrested and charged a man in connection with the brutal 1998 murder of Renee Sweeney, her sister Kim has issued the following statement:
"It has been a very long 20 years. I am so grateful that throughout this time, you have never forgotten my sister, Renée. Not only was she my amazing sister, but she was also my best friend. It’s so hard to relive this and I’m still very numb with shock, but with all the love and support I have received, it’s just made it a little bit easier.
I would like to thank each and every one of you who have come forward with information in regards to Renée. I am overwhelmed by the love and support that the public has shown to my mother and I throughout this difficult time. Unfortunately, my mother has now passed to be with Renée, but I know she would have wanted to thank all of you.
I wish to thank the media for always honouring my sister in a positive light throughout these years and keeping our community informed on her case.
I would also like to send my sincerest thanks to the Greater Sudbury Police. I do not have the words to express my gratitude for your continued dedication to this case. Thank you!
I would also like to acknowledge the efforts Lead Investigator, Detective Sergeant Robert Weston. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your commitment to this case and for always believing that Renée deserved justice for her tragic death. He reassured me, and never gave up hope. He took every matter into deep consideration. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication!
Sincerely,
Kim Sweeney"
Police say Kim asks for continued respect of her privacy at this time.
