Sault police chase fleeing suspect, discover $56K in drugs

A wanted suspect who tried to flee police in Sault Ste. Ste Marie on Thursday has been charged with numerous offences after police seized a large cache of drugs.

A search of the accused located 283 grams of suspected fentanyl, 120 grams of suspected cocaine, 18 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a digital scale, $510 in cash and a cellphone.

The 35-year-old encountered police in the area of Albert and Gore streets around 8:30 p.m.

“The accused and knew they were wanted on an outstanding warrant,” police said in a news release Friday.

“Despite running away from officers when approached, the accused was caught and arrested on the strength of the warrant.”

A search of the accused located 283 grams of suspected fentanyl, 120 grams of suspected cocaine, 18 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a digital scale, $510 in Canadian currency, and a cellphone.

Police said the total estimated street value of drugs seized is $56,414.50.

Charges include three counts of drug trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
