The Nickel City Hockey community in Sudbury is mourning the loss of 11-year-old Riley Salemink following a boat crash on Meteor Lake on Sept. 4.

Meteor Lake is halfway between Sudbury and Timmins.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police’s South Porcupine detachment were called to Meteor Lake south of Morin Village, shortly after 10 p.m. on Sept. 4, according to a previous news release.

Riley was a proud hockey player of the Nickel City Hockey Association. He enjoyed playing soccer, snowmobiling and riding his dirt bike. However, his true passion was fishing.

“He rarely missed an opportunity to fish with family and friends,” family said in his obituary.

“Riley is a U12 player who touched the lives of so many in our hockey community. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and teammates,” the Nickel City Hockey Association said in a Facebook Post.

A Go Fund Me campaign has been started to support the family, specifically to help with the costs of funeral expenses, time off work, counselling and whatever they may need as they grieve this loss.

A memorial will be held for friends and family at the Cooperative Funeral Home in Hanmer on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
