A male youth is in custody following a threat made on social media that prompted a 'hold and secure' at a high school in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday.

Constable Sonny Spina told CTV police officials were called to White Pines Collegiate and Vocational School at around 10:40 a.m. Spina said the situation was resolved within an hour.

At this point, Spina said charges have not been laid against the youth in custody, but an investigation is ongoing.

In a media release, the Algoma District School Board said White Pines was in a ‘hold and secure’ due to a threat made to the school through social media.

The school board said a hold and secure means students are kept indoors and parents/community members are not allowed to enter the school.

“This hold and secure has been lifted as a suspect, who was not on White Pines property, has been apprehended and is in police custody. Students will be taking their full lunch and classes will resume on a shortened scheduled with regular dismissal,” reads a statement from ADSB.

The school board added counsellors and staff will be made available to students who may need support.
