It turns out a World War II era cable was the cause behind elevated radiation levels at the landfill site in North Bay.

The city's engineering department said gamma radiation levels recorded in a bin at the site are linked to a cable used in the 1940s/50s.

Back in July, a bin at the site was isolated when the radiation was first detected.

An Ottawa based consulting firm was hired by the city to look into the cause.

The tubing or radio luminescent rope has a coating of radioactive zinc sulphide.

The firm said the cable may have been used in a World War II era jet.
