A collision involving a truck and a transport has sent two people to hospital and closed part of a busy stretch of roadway in Sault Ste. Marie.

Police say officers responded to the scene of the collision on Truck Road at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

As of 6 p.m. the affected stretch of Trunk Road was re-opened to traffic.

A police official on scene told CTV it was not a fatal collision, but the full extent of injuries is not known at this point.

Two people were extricated from a black truck and transported to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

"When we first arrived our primary concern and our primary focus was getting those people extricated from that vehicle," said Constable Sonny Spina, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

"Once we were able to do that we shifted our focus to ensuring the safety of everyone around here by securing the power lines that are around us. There was some significant damage to some of the poles in the area."

Spina said an investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
