A Sudbury man has been fined $1,800 for possessing walleye of a prohibited size from Lake Nipissing.

In a media release issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said Jeffery Peterson has pleaded guilty to possessing six undersized walleye and he was fined $300 for each fish.

Peterson also received a one-year fishing licence suspension.

Court heard that on February 11, 2017, Peterson was contacted by a conservation officer while returning from ice fishing on the west arm of Lake Nipissing.

"During the initial contact, Peterson only showed his legal catch of perch and a pike," reads a statement from the MNRF.

"Upon further inspection, six undersized walleye were found."

Justice of the Peace Michael Kitlar heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sudbury, on July 14.
