Not the news many people want to hear leading into the weekend, the threat of severe thunderstorms is looming over parts of the north.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Greater Sudbury and North Bay.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” reads an alert from Environment Canada.

“Scattered thunderstorms are forming across portions of the province to the east of Georgian Bay into Eastern Ontario in response to an approaching disturbance. Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon into this evening. Brief wind gusts to 90 km/h, 2 centimetre hail and heavy downpours are the main concerns with these thunderstorms.”
