One person is dead following a fire on Tuesday morning in Greater Sudbury.

Fire crews were called to Potvin Crescent to battle a house fire. When they entered the home, firefighters found the body of a 48-year-old man.

“Fire services arrived and found heavy smoke and flames in the basement,” said Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Jesse Oshell, Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

“They were able to remove one patient with vital signs absent at the time and (he was) transferred to paramedics who were on scene.”

Officials said the man was the lone occupant of the home, located just off Highway 69 in the Richard Lake area. At this point, the cause has not been determined.

“It's deemed to be a Coroner’s investigation right now, until the cause of death can be determined,” said Staff Sergeant Rick Waugh, Greater Sudbury Police Service.

“The OFM has also been notified and attended the scene and we have engineers also attending the scene later today to have a better inspection of the residence.”

The name of the victim has not been released.
