The North Bay and District Humane Society Shelter says there is a large number of dogs in the community and with that comes more demand for dog park space.

"We adopt a lot of dogs on any given month, so it seems to be a popular pet here in North Bay," said Jen Hughes, of the North Bay and District Humane Society.

"Those off leash dog areas are really great because then the dogs get to play as dogs and it gives the owners the chance to socialize and be with dog people."

The society runs the only off-leash dog park in North Bay.

It covered the installation costs for the park, and ongoing maintenance; the land is provided for a dollar per year.

Now, the city is analyzing two locations - either Sage Road or Carruthers Street - for a potential second park.

"People have asked for one that is more centrally located as opposed to one that is on the southern end of the city, so this one is going to be kind of a carbon copy of the one that is existing," Hughes said.

Humane society staff said having a second dog park will give owners more opportunity to get their animals out for some exercise.

"It's a great idea, (we) need as many as we can have because dogs are restricted from beaches and dogs are restricted from a lot of parks," said Jon Armstrong, a dog owner.

Hughes says the anticipated cost is between $40,000 and $50,000. That total includes site preparation, fencing, gates, signs, benches and garbage cans.

Once the location has been determined by the city, the humane society will start looking for community partners to help with funding the project.
