Even with less than a week left of the school year, some grade 3 students in the Sault are still learning something new.

On Friday the students were shown how to play disc golf, the newest sport in Sault Ste. Marie.

The grade 3 students shared their reaction to learning this new sport:

"I like golf and I like to play Frisbee and it’s good to compare them together." said one student.

"Just trying to get it into the hoop is a lot of fun." said another.

Another said it was challenging because of the elements. "It's very fun and hard at the same time because you don't know which way the wind is going to go."

Members of Active Sault and from The Sault Disc Golf Association were on hand teaching the students how to play.

"It’s really easy to learn for a beginner. Most people have thrown a Frisbee in their life. These are specialized discs, but the concept is the same. You take the Frisbee and you throw it towards a hole." said Curtis Vanderloo, from the Sault Disc Golf Association.

You keep track of how many throws it takes, and the person with the lowest score wins. The 12 hole course, a first in Sault Ste. Marie, cost ten thousand dollars to build and the money was donated by the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore.

"Money very well spent. I was driving by last night and it was 9:30 and people were still playing in the park here with discs. Money well spent, the kids seem to like it." said Serge Viau of the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore.

The students believe this will be a popular sport in the community, because its free and anyone can play it.

"It’s not really for boys or girls, it’s just for any people who want to play it" said one enthusiastic player.

One of the main goals for the Sault Disc Golf Association and Active Sault is to head out to elementary schools in the fall to offer free lessons.

They say that way they can grow the game and hopefully have a city wide school tournament next year.
