The federal government rolled out a big funding boost for the town of Cochrane.

Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre announced on Wednesday almost $800,000 in funding. The government said the money is geared to support infrastructure at Commando Park and business growth, while positioning the town as a tourism destination of choice for outdoor enthusiasts.

“I’m pleased that the Government of Canada recognizes our efforts to solidify Cochrane’s position as a major tourism draw for Northern Ontario that is helping to fuel the regional economy,” said Peter Politis, Cochrane mayor, in a media release.

“By investing to improve and expand our outdoor infrastructure and trail systems, FedNor is helping us to send the clear signal that our community is welcoming and open for business.”

The FedNor funding will support three strategic initiatives.

The government said the goal of the initiatives is creating middle-class jobs and a strong economy for Cochrane and surrounding area.

“Tourism is a key economic driver for the Town of Cochrane," said Lefebvre.

"I am thrilled that Wednesday’s announcement will help strengthen and grow this important sector of the economy. Our government is committed to supporting projects that deliver both immediate and long-term results for the people and businesses of northern Ontario, while making the region a better place to live, work, play and visit."
