If you've been to downtown North Bay recently, you may have noticed some new additions to the area.

The city has installed security cameras at two intersections, as part of a long discussed project.

The security cameras are in two locations of the downtown area right now; Main/Wyld and Main/Ferguson.

Robin Cameron is the project lead for the city, and he said this is only one phase. The plan is for more cameras to be added soon.

"Main Street will be covered by cameras at four different intersections, and each intersection will have about three cameras on them," Cameron said.

"The whole feeling of having cameras in different spaces is a norm now, and we feel for us, for the downtown, it's nice to give our customers and the public coming downtown that feeling of security, knowing there are cameras available," said Barry Klus an Economic Development Committee member.

"I think all in all it's a win-win for everybody."

Klus owns two businesses downtown and he said the cameras give owners peace of mind.

"As a store owner, like many owners, we have our own video systems in the stores so it's nothing new to us. Now the fact that there will now be outside cameras to complement our inside cameras," Klus said.

The city said the cost is $20,000 dollars, and North Bay police officials said this will help them a lot.

"It should prevent people from committing crimes when they know they're being filmed, and if they do commit a crime, we should be able to capture that and identify the people that do commit the crimes," Staff Sergeant Rick Dubeau, North Bay Police.

Those on the project said the plan is to eventually roll out more cameras in the future; including downtown walkways and parking areas, but that has yet to be approved.

The city says it's important to note that these cameras are not being monitored and collected footage will only be released upon request from the police.
