Paramedic and police foundations students at Collège Boréal had the chance to put their skills to the test, during a mock disaster training exercise.

The biannual event was held on Thursday; put on in partnership with emergency services representatives from the city of Greater Sudbury.

“Collège Boréal students can only benefit from practical learning experiences offered in a controlled setting," said Daniel Giroux, Collège Boréal president.

"Thanks to this mock exercise, our students will be better prepared to face similar situations while on the job."

Students from four area high schools, who are enrolled in the health and wellness specialist high skills major program, also took part in the simulation.

In total, approximately 100 were on site. This year, the event took place in Collège Boréal’s welding lab.

Paramedic students responded to the scene, took part in patient triage, and assisted in crisis management.

Police foundations students were required to manage the crowd and take witness statements, while the students’ ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively was assessed as part of the exercise.

“For our students, this is an additional opportunity to gain practical training through an enriching and invaluable exercise,” said Lyne Michaud, Collège Boréal vice-president academics.

“I would like to thank our staff members who organized the event, our community partners who were eager to take part as well as all those who contributed to its overall success.”
