North Bay police are warning the public to keep their bicycles in a safe place after a recent rash of thefts.

Police officials said four bicycles that were left locked up have been stolen since the weekend and although one has been recovered, there have been no charges

Stuart Hansen knows all too well the gut wrenching feeling of finding out your thousand dollar bicycle has been stolen.

It’s happened to him twice in the past.

“You get up to see where your bike is and it's gone,” said Hansen.

“It’s not a good feeling, and I was never able to get the two bikes back.”

Now, he said his bicycle is never left outside.

“I don’t even trust locking my bike,” he said. “I just don’t let my bike out of my eyesight anymore. If I do go biking in North Bay, I’ll either keep it in the back of my truck locked and I’ll even keep my truck in view.”

Keeping your bicycle locked up outside might not be enough to deter thefts, according to police. Officials said keep it out of sight and in a safely secured area.

“For overnight storage, if you can bring it indoors that can be an even more secure way to store your bicycle,” said Marie Lugli, North Bay Police Service spokesperson.

Police said four bicycles have been stolen in the past week and they were all locked up.

Bike store owner Kevin Stephens said the problem of stolen bicycles is getting worse.

“It's just too easy for it to get stolen,” said Stephens.

“So you kind of have to have that same mentality, as in the bigger cities, like you have to have a beater bike, that you're going to take to work and lock outside.”

Police officials told CTV officers don’t think the recent bicycle thefts are connected.
